20 Self-Care Activities for the Working Woman

This is a very special edition of Business & Budgets, focused on the ladies who are juggling it all and not making enough time for themselves. Self-care is important and cannot be left on the back burner. If you are not taking good care of yourself you won't be able to do a great job taking care of your kids, your household, your job, your business or anything else. Self-care is so much more than face masks and bubble baths, though those are great activities too. Self-care is about taking care of yourself, mind, body and spirit. The following activities are for the busy mom, the working woman and the woman who's juggling it all but neglecting herself. The best part most of them are free or extremely affordable.



  1. Journal or write poetry: This allows you to have a safe and free way to vent your thoughts and feelings.

  2. Go on a walk: This is a great way to get in touch with nature and help you activate your root chakra. Take the walk barefoot through the grass if you can and hug a tree while you're at it!

  3. Spa day: This doesn't have to be a day full of professional services, a face mask, washing your hair and painting your nails works just fine. If you do go the professional route, use Groupon to save a few dollars.

  4. Take a nap: Sometimes you just need a break. Taking a nap will refresh your body and mind!

  5. Read a book: Curl up in your favorite spot or under a tree if the weather permits and read something. Your favorite book, a book of poems or anything else that will relax and refresh your mind.

  6. Binge watch your favorite show: I wouldn't dare suggest that you do this often or watch more than three or four episodes. But, sometimes unwinding with your favorite show and possibly a glass of wine is just what you need to reset.

  7. Meditate: This is one of my favorite self-care exercises. It gives you the space and opportunity to focus on yourself and release those pent up emotions.

  8. Vent to a trusted friend: While writing in a journal is a great venting exercise, sometimes you need someone to talk back to you. Make sure you don't do this with a judgmental friend who will push you when you already feel like jumping.

  9. Make art: There is something magical about creating with your hands, whether it's a painting, a play-doh structure or a piece of origami, allow the magic to flow through you.

  10. Dance and/or sing: Put on your favorite song or playlist and rock out, like really put on a freaking concert and release the stress!

  11. Spend time with crystals: If you aren't familiar with crystals and the power of them you may want to do a bit of research. A few of my favorites for mediating and relaxation are Clear Quartz, Amethyst, Tigers Eye and Rose Quartz.

  12. Work on a puzzle: I love puzzles, they are extremely helpful for giving me something to do when I am experiencing a ton of anxiety. You can even have the kids help if you want.

  13. Bake cookies AND eat them!: Need I say more? I love a good cookie fix and baking is such a leisurely activity, most people enjoy it.

  14. Be honest with yourself and have positive self-talk: Lying to yourself is the worse lies you can tell. Be honest with yourself about what's going on and then build yourself back up with affirmations that will direct you on how to make things better.

  15. Drink your favorite tea: I'm a black tea girl, but after a stressful day nothing feels better than chamomile in my favorite mug with a splash of honey and a dash of brown sugar.

  16. Stretch or do yoga: When you are stressed out your body feels it, stretching your body allows your body to release that pent up tension.

  17. Light a candle, or twelve: Removing artificial light and relaxing in the soft shadows of lit candles can be great for a moment of mental clarity.

  18. Have a girls night: Go hang out with the girls, don't focus on the drama of life, just catch up and enjoy each other's company.

  19. Take yourself on a date: Spending time with the girls is great but spending time alone can be even better. Go to dinner and a movie. Go check out a new museum exhibit or whatever else YOU want!

  20. Plan a vacation: You don't have to take the vacation, so make it as exciting as possible. Sometimes opening your eyes to new places and things gives you a clear view of what's going on in your reality.
